Thanks for taking the time to be better informed concerning digital and high definition television in the Green Bay television market.

Q. Is FOX 11 broadcasting a digital or high definition signal?
A. WLUK FOX 11 is proud to be able to provide digital programming in high definition. The ability to broadcast a digital signal has been a project that has taken considerable time and resources. WLUK is currently broadcasting simultaneously over 2 different transmitters and antenna systems; one being the customary analog way on Channel 11 and the digital signal on Channel 51. Just like our analog signal on Channel 11, WLUK DT51 is available FREE, over the air, to anyone who has the capability to receive our digital signal.

By law, all American television stations must switch their broadcasting from analog to digital by June 12, 2009. Television sets connected to cable or satellite will not be affected and will continue to receive programming after that date. But those analog television sets not connected to cable or satellite, or without a DTV converter box, will not receive any television signal after the date of the switch. For more information on this switch to digital television go to www.dtvanswers.com.

Q. Is the addition of broadcasting digital programming expensive?
A. FOX 11 has invested over one million dollars in new equipment to provide Northeast Wisconsin our digital channel. In addition, FOX 11 will pay over one hundred thousand dollars each year for power and maintenance of our digital transmitter and antenna.

Q. Does FOX 11 receive any compensation for providing a digital signal?
A. Until recently FOX 11 received no compensation for these expenses. There are no additional advertising dollars associated with our broadcasting a digital signal, and FOX 11 receives no federal or state subsidies for providing a digital signal.

FOX 11 was able to negotiate retransmission agreements with Time Warner, Comcast and Charter Cable companies as well as Direct TV and The Dish Network satellite services.

Q. Will I be able to receive the digital and HD programming on cable?
A. FOX 11's digital or HD programming is currently available on Time Warner, Comcast and Charter cable systems, Direct TV and The Dish Satellite services.

Q. Will there be a significant number of digital or HD programs on FOX 11?
A. Many of FOX 11's premier programs are made available in High Definition 16x9. Most NFC football games including the Packers, Major League Baseball Playoffs and World Series, NASCAR, and many of FOX prime programs are being offered in HD. FOX 11 has completed all the necessary upgrades and will be broadcasting the HD signal. This is FREE to anyone who has the capability to receive our digital signal over the air and on the cable and satellite services listed above.

Q. How can I receive FOX 11's digital and HD signal?
A. You can purchase an HD set with a built-in tuner. This will allow you to receive all of Green Bay television's digital signals over the air for FREE. If you subscribe to Time Warner, Charter or Comcast cable, Direct TV or The Dish Network you will be able to receive FOX 11's digital and HD signal.

I hope this gives you a better understanding of all the issues surrounding digital and high definition television.
