OSHKOSH - It was a bittersweet day in Oshkosh as soldiers with the 1157th Transportation Company left for training camp.

Early this month a special send-off ceremony was held at EAA for the 131 soldiers taking part in the mission overseas. The unit was originally going to Kuwait but recently learned members will be deployed to Afghanistan.

FOX 11's Emily Deem spent Tuesday morning with the troops as they boarded buses, bringing them one step closer to their mission.

The Valentine's Day send-off had friends and family members packed into the Wisconsin Army National Guard Armory in Oshkosh.

"There is still a mission to be done," Capt. Chris Menden said. "And we are part of the effort of the new regime the new part that's going start cleaning up and start bringing people home."

Tuesday marked the first day of the unit's mission overseas.

Spc. Tiffany Baker is 23-years-old and has been with the unit for a year. Spc. Baker wanted to join the army to set an example for her brothers and sisters.

"I have 5 brothers and sisters," Spc. Baker said. "I just really wanted to be a good example and show them what they could do. It's not that it's scary, I just want them to know they can do anything they want to do."

Her family took pictures outside of the Armory before the soldiers left, making sure every memory was captured on camera.

"It's hard to let her go but we're so proud of her," Carolyn Kufahl, Baker's mom said. "This is what she wants to do and we are going to be there for her."

A proud moment for all of the families and friends who showed their support.

Sgt. Robert Tunstall and his family moved to Wisconsin four years ago.

"We really love this state and call it home," Jill Tunstall, Robert's wife said.

Sgt. Tunstall was joined by his wife and two kids at the send-off.

"I brought a sign. It says "See you soon dad"... and I will see him soon," Lillyann Tunstall, Robert's daughter said.

Mothers, fathers, husbands and wives -- even man's best friend came to the send-off.

As the soldiers made their way to the buses, those staying behind could only watch as their loved ones were about to leave. Each bus filled with soldiers left the Armory and headed to the Outagamie Airport.

This mission is not only a test for the soldiers heading overseas but also for the ones they love.

"I got a lot to be here for. So they'll be here," Sgt. Tunstall said.
