Holiday cheer at Governor's Mansion

MAPLE BLUFF - The Governor's Mansion sits on the shores of Lake Mendota in Maple Bluff, just outside of our state's capitol.

There is more than 16,000 square feet of living space.

The first floor is mainly reserved for public gatherings and is decorated the most thorough for the holidays.

The Dining Room offers views of Lake Mendota and is decorated in a Victorian theme for the holidays with hues of pink, purple and silver.  Many holiday meals are hosted in this room.

The Reception Room offers a large amount of space for guests to gather.  It also is where a tree -- -dedicated to U.S. troops -- stands.  Ornaments honor those who have lost their lives and those who are still fighting for our country. 

Governor Scott Walker says out of the 6 trees that stand on the first floor of the mansion, it is his favorite. 

"It touches you just thinking about it," said Walker in an interview with FOX 11's Angela Kelly.

The Drawing Room, which looks like a large living room, is decorated with elegant gold, red and green decorations.  It is also where the Walkers have added touches of their home in Wauwatosa.  Family pictures sit atop a piano in the Drawing Room and stockings with the Walkers' sons' names hang by the fireplace.

The Sun Room features the most whimsical decorations with elves and a "Santa's Workshop" theme.  The tree is decorated with gingerbread ornaments, which were made by kids at the Boys & Girls Club in Madison. 

The Library is decorated more simple, but on purpose.  The Walkers call themselves "Civil War buffs," and have decorated the Library in that theme.  A tree with very simple decorations, including mock candlesticks and wooden beads stands in the back of the room.

The exterior of the mansion is also a sight to see, with multiple wreaths, planters and garlands hanging from the large, white structure.  The black, wrought-iron fence is also draped in bows and garlands.

You can take a tour of the mansion for yourself.  There are tours being offered on Thursday, December 15 and Saturday, December 17.  The tours run Noon - 2 p.m.  Call (608) 246-5501 for more information.
