PLYMOUTH - An area woman, who has become quite the quilt maker, is getting recognized for making a difference in the community.

Linda Wieck from Plymouth won the national "American Legion Auxiliary Woman of the Year" award.

It's for her involvement with the "Camo Quilt Project."

Wieck attended the American Legion Auxiliary award ceremony last month.

She received the award during its 92nd national convention in Indianapolis.

The "Camo Quilt Project" started in 2006 when her son-in-law asked her to make him a quilt before he was deployed to Iraq.

Fellow service members liked it so much, they asked for quilts for themselves.

Wieck hasn't slowed down since then.

17,600 quilts have been made and distributed to troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Each quilt takes three hours to make.

Volunteers help sew about 500 a month.
