Packers were hot topic on social media in 2011

Lots of buzz about team after Super Bowl win

Whether it was Facebook or Twitter, the Green Bay Packers - or more specifically, their fans - made a big splash in 2011. Both outlets released some of their end-of-the-year lists recently.

On Facebook, the Packers' Super Bowl victory in February produced the second-biggest spike in status updates in the year. In fact, the Facebook blog points out, there was a spike in activity on the website after each of the Packers' playoff games leading up to the championship. Only the death of Osama bin Laden topped the Super Bowl for buzz on Facebook, which did not release specific traffic numbers.

Over on Twitter, the Super Bowl made an impact as well. On game day, users reached a high of more than 4,000 tweets per second. That number was the 15th-highest of any subject.

The topic that just edged it out - with a little under 5,000 tweets per second - also has a Wisconsin sports connection. That was the Major League Baseball Home Run Derby - that included Milwaukee Brewers Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks.

By another measure, Twitter reports the Packers were also a “hot topic” in 2011. In the football category, the phrases "Green and Yellow" and "Superbowl MMXI" were the number two and three ranked topics. But there were no specific traffic numbers released in this category.

Wondering what else was hot on social media this year?

The buzz on both Facebook and Twitter ranged from military action in Libya to actor Charlie Sheen's antics to the resignation and death of Apple Computers co-founder Steve Jobs.
