Question: “With three kids, my family is constantly on the go. We usually don’t have time for anything but fast food. I am worried about maintaining a healthy diet for my family.”
Answer: Luke T. Warpinski, M.D., a family medicine physician at Aurora Health Center – Bay Settlement, offers this information:
While most fast foods are typically higher in fat and calories than food prepared at home, eating on the go doesn’t have to be hard on your health. It’s important to be aware of your choices. Many fast food chains have options that would fit into a healthy lifestyle.
Some healthy fast food choices include:
• a plain baked potato
• a grilled chicken sandwich without mayonnaise
• a garden or grilled chicken salad with low-fat dressing
• a turkey or chicken sub on white or wheat without condiments
Avoid using mayonnaise and salad dressings. That’s where the fat and calories start to add up. And remember to compliment your on-the-go lifestyle with fresh fruits or vegetables. You can choose quick snacks such as an apple or some carrots, which will help provide nutrients and vitamins you need to maintain a balanced diet.
For more information on nutrition, please consult with your health care professional.
That’s today’s health tip from Aurora BayCare Medical Center.
