The Dangers of Lead

Last week I was talking about lead. Most of us realize that lead used to be in almost everything, and while it was removed from a lot of things, it still maintains a large presence in our society.

It can pose serious health risks for children as well as adults. As I stated last week, my family's own personal experience was devastating, leading to a kidney transplant for my husband.

I don't know whether most people realize that your standard car battery contains lead. If that casing surrounding the battery is cracked, it could be leaking lead into our groundwater. Proper storage and disposal is crucial to the health of our society. When you remove a battery do NOT leave it outside. Make sure it is under cover in a garbage can or some type of sealed container. But honestly the best thing to do is bring it in, and at this time - for this type of battery - we would pay you for it.

Now with regard to an alkaline battery or a NICad there would be a charge for them. Most of the items you would bring you would get paid for - there are some you will get charged for; this is not to be unfair but in cleaning up the mess we and our forefathers have made there is an expense.

My philosophy in life has become that one way or another we pay for everything in life on the way in or on the way out. Do you want to be healthy and have a full life, knowing that you have done all you can to make it better for future generations? Or choose the easy path and know that our great grandchildren will sacrifice for our need of ease and simplicity?
