Early season snow isn't uncommon

The first snowflakes of the season have come and gone, and for most of the area, the early October snowfall wasn't enough to accumulate. That was nearly a month ago. Since then, rain has been the main form of precipitation. But statistics show, snow may be just around the corner.

The average first measurable snowfall in Green Bay is on November 11th.

Meanwhile, the first inch of snow tends to hold off until the third week of the month. To find even higher snowfall totals, it usually requires waiting until December.

On average, the first three inch snowfall occurs during the second week of December.

During the past 20 years, Northeast Wisconsin has generally lived up to these averages. However, there have been exceptions.

In 1995, Winter Storm Bowler dropped more than 10 inches of snow on November 27th. Five years later, the first Winter Storm arrived even earlier.

Winter Storm Zittau, blanketed parts of the area with 4 to 7 inches of snow on November 15th and 16th

And recently, early season snowfall hasn't been uncommon. In 2006 and inch and a half fell on November 10th, and just last year, the nearly record setting season also started off quickly - with around three inches of snow falling on the Monday before Thanksgiving.

These past storms have shown snow can add up in November, but once on the ground, it can have a hard time sticking around. The average high on the last day of the month is 35°, which is still above the freezing mark.
