Hobart firefighters makes dreams come true

Four-year-old with cancer made honorary member

HOBART - Four-year-old Jacob Andrew loves the idea of being a firefighter. And thanks to the volunteers at the Hobart Fire Department, his dream came true.

"We made him an honorary fire department member. He got his own set of gear, helmet, boots and he got to walk through steps of a normal firefighter would do," said firefighter Robert Linz.

Jacob got to spend the day learning the ropes of the job, including checking out the fire trucks and testing out the fire hose. It was to have been a Christmas present, but at the time Jacob was too sick after undergoing treatment for cancer.

"Jacob has neuroblastoma. When diagnosed, he was high-risk stage four and he's fighting it since January 15, 2010," said Jennifer Andrew, Jacob's mother.

While Jacob has had his medical ups and downs, his latest treatment has him feeling better.

"We have seen a little improvement recently, so we're excited," Jennifer Andrew said.

And Jacob is excited to travel from his home in Manitowoc to Hobart to become one of the team. While on duty, he even got a special fire call sending him and the others into action. And it was firefighter Jacob putting out the flames.

"It's awesome spending time with kids like that when they never experience stuff like that and going through a difficult time and it puts a smile on their face and tears to your eyes to see kids happy like that," said fire Capt. Russell Krause.

"I put a fire out, and it was fun," said Jacob.

"Thankfully he's still feeling really good. The disease is mainly in his legs and bone marrow and we take it one day at a time and treasure these moments like we did today," said Jennifer Andrew.

Moments the fire volunteers say make their job special too.
