Jobs are at risk in Oshkosh where the United States Postal Service is proposing closing its distribution center and having the work consolidated in Green Bay.
We learned from the Postal Service today what the impact could be.
First, a saving of $4.6 million is expected by making the move.
But in the process, the postal service announced there would be a net loss of 54 jobs.
And taking a closer look tonight, the postal service is also arguing closing one center makes sense because the two are just 55 miles apart.
It's an issue created by the financial mess nationwide.
In the last three years, it's already cost 15 percent (-100,000) of postal workers their jobs.
That's because mail volume is down 20 percent (-41 million pieces) on top of a similar decline since 2000.
Leading to a net 3-year loss of $15 billion, including $8 billion for the federal budget year ending Sept. 30.
However, the number of postal locations has dropped less than two percent.
The proposal suggests delivery will not be affected. Postal union leaders disagree. Retail services will remain, but just for now.
A public meeting on the proposal is scheduled for next Tuesday, Nov. 23, in Oshkosh.
