Going back over records since 1900, this quake in Japan is the fifth strongest ever. It was measured at 8.9.
Going backward, chronologically, in 2004, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake took place in the Indian Ocean. It triggered a deadly tsunami, that killed 230,000 people, in a dozen countries.
In 1964, the strongest earthquake was measured in the U.S. It was a 9.2 magnitude quake in Prince William Sound, Alaska. It also resulted in a tsunami and killed 131 people.
In 1960, in southern Chile, there was a 9.5 magnitude quake, the strongest ever to took place. The ensuing tsunami killed more than 1,700.
And finally, in 1952, a 9.0 quake was recorded in eastern Russia. It caused damage and the flooding you see here, but no deaths.
