GREEN BAY - While the first lesson hasn't yet been taught, many students have been coming back to school for weeks now.
The Southwest High School Dance Team has put in countless hours of practice over the summer, getting ready to perform at football games.
And speaking of football, the season has already begun. Players at schools throughout Northeast Wisconsin have been studying the plays and getting prepped for the past month. The first games of the season took place last week.
Preble High School Principal Jeff Sielaff says the first day of school isn't what it used to be.
"There aren't a lot of kids who just leave and don't come back for something in the summer. Between all the sports, all the open gyms and summer school there's a lot of kids that are here in the summer," said Sielaff.
Over at Eisenhower Elementary School in Green Bay students and parents were coming and going this day before classes begin. It was a chance to set the groundwork for learning.
"This is wonderful I like they got to meet the teacher and principal," said Sandra Vielma, a parent of a first grader.
While some kids are shy about expressing their return to school, many parents seem genuinely glad summer is coming to an end.
"Oh definitely, we've been ready," said Melinda Meshigaud, a parent of a second grader and pre-schooler.
Not quite ready are all the teachers. Even though many have been back in the school since the start of August, a teacher's work in preparing is never done.
"I think there's going to be a lot of people here tonight real late trying to get things done," said Eisenhower teacher Angela LaCombe.
For Rachel Hoffman this is her senior year. And while she's excited to graduate, she's a bit hesitant to have summer end and get on with her life.
"The whole atmosphere of school is just like pressure and since I’m a senior like getting ready for college and applying for scholarships and working on getting a job," said Hoffman.
Like it or not the first day of school will start early September 1st.
"We're ready, we're ready..." exclaimed Sielaff.
