Just as there is uncertainty in Fond du Lac, a jolt of anxiety shot through Stillwater, Okla., yesterday when a third union vote was announced.
Larry Brown, president of the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce says they have not given up hope and even if the union accepts the deal, Mercury could yet be headed to Stillwater. He thinks the future of Mercury Marine belongs in Oklahoma because it is a right-to-work state and corporate and income taxes are low. Brown said the announcement of a third vote caught him by surprise.
"It's a little difficult to accept one more chance moving forward when at least our position was everything was out in the open, was clear, and they made their decision early on," said Brown.
There are approximately 385 workers at the Stillwater plant.
There is no word on how many jobs could be eliminated.
