FOX 11 medical expert Dr. Alan Cherkasky usually works out of a clinic in Kaukauna. But last week, Dr. Al travelled to Haiti to provide medical care to people suffering from last month's massive earthquake.
"What I saw was total devastation," Dr. Al told FOX 11.
Dr. Al met up with a group of doctors on his way to Haiti. The group worked near the epicenter of the quake near Port-Au-Prince. He said each day, the group would set up a clinic in a different place. Large crowds gathered for the chance to see a doctor. Dr. Al said the doctors in the group were able to care for hundreds of patients over the five days.
"We took care of fractures and dislocations and wound care and infections, a baby with a skull fracture, we did that," Dr. Al said. "We either took care of them where we were or we made sure they were triaged and taken care of."
But they could not take care of everyone. Dr. Al said many people had to be turned away from the clinics.
"I saw a 70-year-old woman who came in for a little check up and she had an obvious bad breast cancer. What's she going to do? She's going to die from it," Dr. Al said.
While this medical trip to Haiti is over, Dr. Al says he would consider going back in the future because the need will not go away anytime soon.
