FOND DU LAC - Dozens gathered to remember seven Vietnam veterans killed in action buried here at Calvary Cemetery. However, when a planned flyover didn't pan out, family members say the memorial was still a chance to think of those who died for the sake of freedom.
"It's just the thought, the thought and that's what we're here for is thinking about all of them and all the veterans," said Thomas Hilbert.
Hilbert’s brother-in-law, Richard Timmons, was 20 when he was killed, and his family says they were happy to see so many pay their respect.
"He died over in Vietnam, serving his country and being there for us, for all of us. So we wanted to be here for him and for all of the veterans," said Hilbert.
Four helicopters from Indiana were supposed to hover over the graves as a tribute, but were grounded in Indiana because of fog.
Dave Shaw's brother Tom was a helicopter pilot in the war. He says while the thought of the Vietnam War brings back many memories, it's good to remember those who served.
"For us, it's a long time coming for these guys to get paid their respect and their dues and honor for what they did for our country," said Dave Shaw.
Kevin Shaw says even though the helicopters didn't make it, he was happy to honor his brother.
"A little disappointed, but you know you can't do much about the weather, and the spirit was here," said Kevin Shaw.
