MADISON, Wis. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold is defending his decision not to appear with President Barack Obama at a Labor Day rally on Monday in Milwaukee.
Feingold's campaign manager George Aldrich says in a statement issued Friday that Feingold intends to honor his commitment to participate in the Labor Day parade held in his hometown of Janesville during the time when Obama is speaking.
Feingold will be at the Milwaukee Labor Day event on Monday morning before Obama arrives.
Aldrich says Feingold asked if the president could change the time of his visit so the senator could appear with him, but that was not possible.
Feingold is in a tough re-election bid against Republican Ron Johnson.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett intends to appear with Obama on Monday.
