DE PERE - A former NFL lineman is helping kids tackle diabetes at St. Norbert College in De Pere.
It’s all part of Camp Endeavor, a one-day event for children with diabetes.
According to organizers nearly 66 children are participating in the event at Schuldes Sports Center.
As part of the camp, Jay Leeuwenburg, who spent four seasons with the Chicago Bears and three with the Indianapolis Colts, is sharing his story about living with type 1 diabetes.
“I think it is a real positive message, if I’m able to make it in the NFL with diabetes, then you can be a doctor, lawyer, cheerleader, football player,” said Leeuwenburg. “I think these kids hear so many times you can’t do something. I’m here to give them a positive message that you can do whatever you want.”
While at Camp Endeavor, kids and their families are learning how to better manage the disease through a healthy diet and exercise. They also got a chance to play dodgeball with Leeuwenburg and get his autograph.
