GREEN BAY - For many the Labor Day weekend marks the last chance for summer travel. Although windy, cool weather conditions make it seem more like fall.

"We're lighting a fire now because it's cold, we probably wouldn't have a fire now if it weren't so cold this early," said Steve Wiegert, Green Bay.

Bundled in hooded sweatshirts, circling around their campfire, campers who are stuck outside must be irritated with the sudden drop in temperature, right?

"I'd rather have this, it was just so super warm," said Mary Deprey, Green Bay.

Chilly weather isn't keeping these vacationers down, so what about gas prices? Jeff Lenz is making a nearly four hour drive from Fond du Lac to Crandon.

"I wouldn't care what the gas prices were. I'd still be going up there," said Lenz.

And Marylou Wollman who drove almost three hours from Madison to Green Bay? She says it gas prices were up to four dollars a gallon, she'd still make the trek.

According to AAA spokesperson Roy Hinz, there are two main reasons for the travel enthusiasm.

"People are feeling a little better about the economy and the second thing is consumer confidence has been gradually increasing," said Hinz.

Hinz says travel of at least 50 miles from home is up 10% nationwide this holiday weekend. And in Wisconsin alone, Labor Day weekend travel is up nearly 11%. He says the next big travel time is Thanksgiving and since its months away people are determined to get this getaway in.

"People kind of help back taking as many vacations this summer, they were watching to see how things were going," said Hinz.

So while the weather is cooler, economy still shaky and gas prices still higher than many would like, does it affect these campers trip at all?

"Not when it comes to our friends. It doesn't matter," said Wollman.
