MADISON - Following Gov. Scott Walker's budget address, Republicans and Democrats had a better idea of what they'll be working with over the next few weeks.
For Republicans, there was a lot of optimism.
"I feel very good about where we're going in terms of broad-based tax relief and really looking for things that are going to help our future workforce and getting people jobs now," said State Rep. Andre Jacque, R-De Pere.
However, Democrats are skeptical. They say Walker does not have the best interests of the middle and working classes at heart.
"Seemed like someone who is completely unaware of what most people in Wisconsin are going through. It was not a speech that I would say was grounded in reality. It was kind of how he wants to view the world," said State Rep. Gordon Hintz, D-Oshkosh.
For example, Democrats we spoke with say they disagree with some of Walker's plans for education dollars.
They say he wants to put too much into the voucher program at the expense of public schools.
"Extend public funds to unaccountable private schools? I just have a real problem with that. Our public schools are changing, they're innovating and they're really doing a great job for our kids," said State Rep. Eric Genrich, D-Green Bay.
But Republicans say there are many areas where Walker's plans are the right way to go. For example, those we spoke with say putting more money into strengthening the workforce is just one good idea.
"There is a skills gap and to put more money toward that will give them the people and the training that they'll need," said State Rep. Paul Tittl, R-Manitowoc.
Both sides say there are points that can and will be improved upon as they start looking over the details in the coming days.
