Police discovered a young girl left alone in a locked vehicle after responding to a bar fight.
Officials say at about 12:30 early Sunday morning they found a 21-month-old girl in a car in the parking lot of the Loading Dock on North Webster Avenue in Green Bay.
“It's incomprehensible that you'd leave a child sit in a car for any period of time,” said William Baker, the owner of the Loading Dock.
Police are still investigating and aren't releasing any names, but say it started with a woman upset about having to watch her niece. Authorities say the woman went to the Loading Dock to confront her sister, the girl’s mother. A fight started in the bar and ended up outside.
“When the officers arrived and were collecting my information, Officer Atlas discovered there was a small child locked in a not running vehicle,” said Natalie Dekeyser, who was bartending at the Loading Dock.
“She had a coat on, but no hat, no gloves and she had pulled one of her shoes and socks off so she had a bare foot hanging out,” said Dekeyser.
Police say the young girl's aunt left the bar with the car keys.
“They ended up breaking the window,” said Dekeyser.” I was talking to the child so in case it shattered it wouldn't hit her in the face.
No one knows how long the girl was in the car, but police believe it was likely between 20 to 30 minutes.
“I wanted to bust the window myself to get her out,” said Dekeyser. “I felt so bad. I have two little kids myself and I would just freak out.”
FOX 11 meteorologists say at the time of night that the young girl was left in the car it was about 16 degrees outside.
“I was freezing and I felt so bad for her,” said Dekeyser. “I couldn't even think about myself.”
Dekeyser says the girl was calm through the ordeal.
“It was just a good thing it was then and not in the morning because she probably wouldn't have made it when the temperatures dropped.”
Police say the girl checked out fine at the hospital and is now staying with a relative.
Authorities say they are still determining what charges, if any, the girl's aunt will face. They say her mother was arrested for battery and disorderly conduct. Police are also recommending charges of child neglect.
