Giant sinkhole opens near Forest Junction

CALUMET COUNTY - One man found out the hard way the strength of rushing water. He had no idea that the road he takes to work was washed out.

Flash flooding in Calumet County turned creeks into fast-moving rivers. A part of Cemetery Rd. near Forest Junction could not stand up to the muddy waters and washed way.

The road continued to fall into the hole while FOX 11 Meteorologist Doug Higgins was standing there.

A couple of hours earlier, the giant sinkhole nearly swallowed a man and his truck.

"He was going fast enough that he managed to get across the gap, tore the front wheels off his pickup truck and he was injured and transported to the hospital,” said Mark Schnell of the Town of Brillion.

You can still see the scrape marks, pieces of blacktop and oil where the truck landed.

Calumet County sheriff's officials say the man suffered a minor leg injury.

Cemetery Rd. is closed and residents will have to wait for the water to recede before work can begin to replace the culvert and pave the road.

"It's a large diameter culvert so we'll have to get big equipment in here to install a new one,” said Schnell.

A washed out road, just another of the hazards of flash flooding.

Calumet County official say it will take about two weeks to get the road rebuilt.
