If you're planning to ice fish on Lake Winnebago, a huge crack in the ice may make you think twice.
Ice expert Don Herman with Sunk? Dive & Ice Service in Oshkosh flew over the lake Thursday.
He says there is a crack that goes from Fond du Lac to Neenah. It is 10 feet wide in some places and 150 feet in others.
Don also says about 70 percent of the cracks and holes are frozen over with about one to six inches of ice.
There are still spots that are open.
Don has mapped out the ice conditions.
He says the wide crack that runs along the west shore is anywhere from next to shore to 400 yards out.
He says some diehards are driving vehicles out from the east shore and some fishermen with four wheelers are going out from Waugoo Ave. and Ceape Ave. in Oshkosh.
He says there is 5 inches of ice where it was open Sunday. However, there is only one inch of ice near Merritt Avenue in Oshkosh and it is not recommended to go out there.
But, as always, Don recommends if you're planning to go on the lake, check with experts first.
