Be safe this New Year's Eve

NEENAH - Some will be watching the Times Square festivities on TV, while others will be out Monday night and for those folks, officials are warning not to drink and drive.

New Year's Eve is a night to celebrate.

Neenah Police Lieutenant Jeff Malcore told FOX 11 that's great as long as you don't drink and then drive.

"You get behind the wheel you're a weapon. You crash into somebody you're maybe gonna kill yourself, kill somebody else or do major damage or major harm," said Malcore.

To ensure safety on the roads, four OWI task forces are joining forces for the last night of 2012.

Brown, Fox Valley, Winnebago, and Manitowoc will have a total of up to 60 additional officers patrolling.

"Now officers can cross jurisdictional lines. So now you have more officers out on the streets keeping everybody safe," explained Malcore.

And there are some easy ways to stay safe if you've had one too many.

For example, Miller Lite is offering a free ride on any of the Green Bay Metro bus routes.

The Neenah Police Department has chartered a taxi to take people home for free as well.

Some bars offer free safe rides too.

Malcore told us you should have a plan to get home safely before you head out.

"Like anybody, once you start drinking you judgment's impaired and you always think it couldn't happen to you, but if you have a plan, if you have somebody with you you can count on, in this day with cell phones, everyone's got one. There's really no excuse not to call someone to help you out," said Malcore.
