CAMPBELLSPORT - Less than a week after three Campbellsport High School students were killed, family and friends gathered to remember their lives.
Memorial services were held Friday afternoon in the gym of Campbellsport High School for Sabrina Stahl, Katie Berg and Caitlin Scannell. They were killed, while six others were injured, in a one-vehicle crash in Fond du Lac County on Saturday.
The visitation started around 3 p.m. It was scheduled to end at 7 p.m., however people were still coming out of the school hours later. The families asked that media stay off of school ground’s for the ceremony.
“It’s emotional, but it’s an opportunity to honor my sister’s memory and help the community grieve,” said Ryan Scannell, Caitlin’s brother.
Scannell is one of many people in the community who showed support for the girls on their shirt. Pink, purple and coral ribbons were worn to represent the girls’ favorite colors.
“It's just respect I guess,” said Jodie Meloy, a friend of the girls. “Some of the ribbons have three for each of the girls. We made fun ones, different colorful ones, just to show respect and how much we care.”
Similar symbols of remembrance can be found around the community. Some of the about 2,000 people who live in Campbellsport say it is a sign people are standing united during this tough time.
“It’s just very sad and hopefully it’s a lesson for everyone that we need to be careful and wear seatbelts and just everything,” said Alex Wilson, a friend. “It’s just been a rough week.”
As for Scannell, he says the outpouring of support has helped his family deal with their loss.
“It means a lot to know that my sister was such an important part of the community and had done so much good, positive work here and to see the community giving that support back to us, it really means a lot,” said Scannell.
Separate funerals are scheduled for the girls on Friday.
