CAMPBELLSPORT - A 7-year-old girl from Campbellsport is recovering at Children's Hospital in Wauwatosa. She was shot in the back with an arrow Sunday night.
It happened in the 100 block of E. Main St. in Campbellsport.
The girl's grandmother said the arrow damaged the girl's lungs, diaphragm, stomach and spleen. She had surgery and won't be able to eat solid food for several days.
The Fond du Lac County sheriff says little 7-year-old Aryanna Schneeberg was playing with her siblings on the sidewalk when the unfathomable happened.
“It appears the arrow came at a high angle and impacted the left side of her back, causing some significant injuries,” said Sheriff Mick Fink.
Fink says deputies canvassed the neighborhood around Main St. in Campbellsport. Officers looked for arrows that could have matched the one that hit Schneeberg.
"It wasn't a child's arrow, from a little bow and arrow. It was an arrow that would be used for hunting,” he described.
They found a man who owned a bow and arrows. Fink says the man cooperated with the deputies during the search. No one was arrested.
“We did collect that as evidence to have that analyzed. There were also some items that were taken that we're not going to get into on a consent search,” he said.
Law enforcement says their investigation continues as they don't know who fired the arrow. However, they don't believe the public is at risk.
"It appears it was a stray arrow that hit the child. The questions is, where did that arrow come from?” asked Fink.
The sheriff says he and his staff hope to soon answer that and other questions surrounding this rare case.
"I’ve been here 31 years and I don't remember one. I remember people getting hurt by bow and arrows,” he said.
Schneeberg's family says she's still in the hospital, and despite her injuries, she's been recovering well.
