APPLETON - UPDATE: Appleton police say the driver in the crash was ticketed for speeding in a school zone and failure to yield to a pedestrian. We've amended our original report, which follows:

A 10-year-old student and a crossing guard were hit Wednesday morning near an Appleton elementary school.

The vehicle struck them in front of McKinley Elementary, which is located on E. Taft Ave.

Officials say the 49-year-old crossing guard was helping the student across the street just before 8 a.m.

The crossing guard suffered a leg injury and the student's arm was injured. The driver of the vehicle wasn't hurt.

Police are continuing their investigation.
