APPLETON - A German shepherd is a family pet at this Appleton home, but the city says he is a dangerous animal. That's because on two separate occasion the dog bit an area postal worker. The injuries were not severe, but Mayor Tim Hanna told FOX 11 it's a serious issue.
"Our police department declared the animal a dangerous animal under our ordinance," explained Hanna.
Meaning the dog can no longer live within Appleton's city limits. It does not have to be euthanized.
Hanna told us at a meeting with the city the canine's owners apologized for what happened and were compliant.
"I think the owner has made the decision to find a new home," said Hanna.
According to the U.S. Postal Service, more than 5,000 postal carriers are bitten by dogs each year across the country.
Hanna told us about one animal a year is declared dangerous in Appleton.
"We have an obligation to protect our, not just our citizens, but anybody who happens to be in the city," said Hanna.
And Hanna said this story serves as a reminder to other dog owners: they have an obligation too.
"To control their animals. To train them and control them," said Hanna.
FOX 11 asked the dog's owners for an interview, but they declined. Under the city's ordinance, they have 30 days to find their pet a new home.
We were unable to get in touch with the postal worker who was bitten.
