OSHKOSH - Getting fit is always a popular New Year's resolution.

It can be a tough one to stick with all year long.

But Tuesday morning, many braved the cold weather to work in a workout and just like that 2013 is off and running and so are hundreds of people in Oshkosh. On their way to making fitness a part of their daily routine.

"Yeah we just started running, took it up just a couple of months ago, looking forward to doing a lot more of it this year," said Travis Stargardt of Waukesha before the start of the Color My New Year 5K run in Oshkosh.

Stargardt was one of about 600 runners taking part in the race. All with a common goal in mind.

"It's a great way, because you are already thinking of it as a new year, let's start on the right foot, it doesn't matter what day of the week it is and then you really just need to keep going," said Julie Smith of Oshkosh Community YMCA.

Whether they were running or riding, fitness enthusiasts say they weren't going to let the cold weather stop them from starting their new year out right.

"There is a lot of folks in the organization that know how to dress and have the right equipment, so whatever the weather is there is going to be folks out here riding," said Rob Gusky, president of the Fox Cities Cycling Association.

More than two dozen riders from the Fox Cities Cycling Association hit the streets of Appleton on the first day of 2013.

"I got into it first for the financial aspect of it when gas was over four bucks a gallon but I'm in it now just for the exercise and the health benefits I get," said Gusky.

And whether you exercise alone or with others, Smith says taking it one step at a time is the key to long term success.

"Twenty-two times you do something it will become a habit and we want to help you with that, there are barriers and so if you can just keep coming, you'll get over that."

Some of the most popular resolutions for 2013 include spending more time with family and friends, exercising, losing weight, quitting smoking, and to just enjoy life more.
