TOWN OF MUKWA - Friends and family in the New London area continue to mourn the deaths of two teenagers, killed in a car crash late Friday night.
The State Patrol has reported that 17-year-olds Yalanda Maggio and Levi Johnson died in the crash. Their car was coming around a curve and crashed, head-on, into a bus, carrying 39 middle school students returning from a ski trip.
Diana Thompson, Maggio’s grandmother, told FOX 11 her granddaughter and Johnson had been dating since about Christmas.
A steady stream of family and friends visited the crash site Monday evening, which is right across the street from New London High School.
Two crosses reading Yalanda and Levi are now in the ground where the crash happened.
“I found out Saturday morning and I don't live in town and I just had to call my dad up and tell him I needed to be here today,” said Jamie Cummings, a friend visiting the crash site. “I'm out of tears. I cried so much this weekend. I couldn't physically cry anymore.”
While Maggio and Johnson lost their lives, three students on the bus and its driver suffered minor injuries.
Officials say speed and poor road conditions played a role in the crash.
