KAUKAUNA - Kaukauna hosted the annual Fox Firecracker 5K run-walk along more than three miles of winding hills.
Members of the UW Madison marching band made a stop at the event, playing music for the runners.
Organizers say the event is a way to get in a little running before evening fireworks.
"We do this because we want to celebrate America's birthday, we want to make it red, white and blue as patriotic as we can, every finisher gets a flag, it's really a great day to be an American," said Dr. Alan Cherkasky.
Organizers say they had to put in extra water stops this year to keep the 1,138 runners hydrated in the heat-- a slightly smaller turnout of participants than in the past three years.
