HORTONVILLE - For Wade Knorr and his six-year-old daughter Kyla, a day on the ice beats the alternative.
“Because then I'd just be lazy,” said Kyla Knorr.
In a digital world, members of the Hard Water Maniacs are hoping to lure more youngsters to ice fishing.
“It's kind of a thing that's leaving the younger generation,” said R.C. Wichlidal of Wausau. “They are not getting out here. You've got more video games.”
“The sports that we as adults love, won't move on if we don't get the youth interested,” said Raymond Tiffany of the Hard Water Maniacs. “They are the sports people of tomorrow.”
For Kids Fishing Day at Black Otter Lake, experienced fishermen provided one-on-one instruction, giving out tips and teaching techniques.
“Our slogan is learn what you can, but teach what you know,” said Tiffany. “We believe that something isn't worth learning if you're not willing to teach it and pass it on.”
For some parents, the day's lessons were also useful.
“We usually fish in the summer time, so I've always wanted to ice fish, just haven't had the chance to,” said Christie Buck of Kaukauna.
“I live on a lake in Campbellsport and it'd be fun to ice fish when there's ice,” said Jonathon Schellinger.
The fishing mentors say the sport can be inexpensive. They also say its never too soon to start.
“As soon as they can hold a fishing rod,” said Tiffany. “There's no limit on ice fishing.”
“It's just the excitement of catching the fish,” said Schellinger.
This was the first year for Kids Fishing Day. Organizers hope to make it an annual event.
