APPLETON - More than 60 years after his death, an Appleton soldier has been buried with full military honors. Pfc. Arthur Hopfensperger died in the line of duty during the Korean War in 1950.
Hopfensperger's family finally got to say good bye to their hero.
"The family just feels relief finally that he's back here where he should be," said Hopfensperger's cousin, who shares the same name.
The other Arthur Hopfensperger told FOX 11 this is a day he never thought would come.
"We thought that they were never really going to find him and finally they did, which was a surprise. It's kind of tragic in a way, his mom and dad are gone, but the rest of the family's at ease that he's finally back," said Arthur.
Hopfensberger enlisted in the military when he was 17. He died in battle at 18 in 1950. Since then, his family was left in the dark.
His nephew Robin told FOX 11 he can't thank enough the people who brought his uncle's remains home.
"Nice to know that the government doesn't give up. I mean, 62 years to bring someone home, it's a good feeling," said Robin Hofensperger.
As family and friends gathered to say good bye, so did servicemen and women and veterans from all branches to provide full military honors.
Richard Forrest with the Patriot Guard Riders told us it's never easy.
"A bruise that's bumped still bleeds, doesn't matter how long," said Forrest.
And the family is grateful for their support.
"They're fantastic...makes you feel proud," said Robin.
"Actually, a great deal. It's just a great honor," said Arthur.
For more than an hour following the memorial service, the Patriot Guard Riders stood out at the burial site in silence with American flags to show respect for Pfc. Hopfensperger.
