APPLETON - The man killed in a Friday night confrontation with Appleton police has been identified.

The Outagamie County coroner’s office says Keith A. Gabriel, 61, was the man killed. An autopsy was done on Saturday, but coroner’s officials are not releasing further details.

Appleton Police Chief Peter Helein says officers were called to 120 E. Spring St. around 9:15 p.m. Friday for a report of illegal fireworks. When they arrived, they found Gabriel holding a gun. Helein says Sgt. Greg Pieper radioed for help and told Gabriel to drop the gun. Helein says Pieper then shot Gabriel, who died at the scene.

Appleton police have turned the investigation over to Green Bay police because an officer was involved in the shooting.
