Pets not immune to cold temps

APPLETON - In times of extreme cold, it's important to make sure pets are also staying warm.

Workers at Chances Animal Rescue in Appleton have some tips for protecting your pet from the chilly temps.

They say walks should be shortened, to prevent frostbitten paws and ears.

Owners also need to make sure their pet has an insulated shelter, especially if it's kept outside.

The shelter's founder said no pet is immune to the frigid temperatures.

"To be out in this cold is really not good for any dog, even the ones who can adapt to it. Because, if they're out there too long, they can get sick. They can freeze," said Mary Vandenheuvel.

Vandenheuvel also said pet owners should wait to shave off a dog's shaggy winter coat.

The extra fur helps the animals stay warm.
