Probation in Fond du Lac Co. arrow case

Bennett must also perform community service

FOND DU LAC - A Campbellsport teen will not go to jail convicted of shooting a seven-year-old girl with an arrow.

A judge sentenced 17-year-old Casey Bennett to probation. Bennett was convicted of injuring Aryanna Schneeberg back in May.

For almost two weeks, investigators searched for the person responsible for shooting Schneeberg.

"It was frustrating at first, but the outcome was good that we were finally able to resolve it," said Lt. Cameron McGee with the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department.

Bennett initially lied to investigators about his role in the case. Police say Bennett eventually confessed he and a friend were shooting at a squirrel in a nearby tree. Bennett pleaded guilty to causing injury with a dangerous weapon and obstruction Monday. He received a total of four years of probation.

The Schneebergs did not want to talk after court. Detectives say despite the significant amount of man hours involved in investigating this case, they agree with the judge's ruling.

"The case was a long investigation and I believe the outcome was probably reasonable and hopefully it sends a message to other kids out there that are planning on doing something like this that there are consequences to those types of actions," said McGee.

Bennett must also serve 300 hours of community service and write letters of apology to both the Schneebergs and the sheriff's department.

Bennett will also have to help pay Schneeberg's medical bills. Aryanna's mother told the court her daughter is still being treated for her injuries.
