FOND DU LAC - One year ago today the only unidentified murder victim in Fond du Lac County was laid to rest.
Detectives say Jane Doe was murdered. Her body was found partially submerged in a creek bed in the Town of Ashford by hunters in 2008.
Very little is known about the woman. After three years of searching for a name and her killer, she was buried at a small cemetery just outside of Waupun.
"Someone knows who she is and we'd like to bring closure to the family and bring this case to a successful resolution," said Fond du Lac Sheriff's Department Lt. Cameron McGee.
Since she was found, detectives have accumulated thousands of pages of information. Collecting dozens of boxes full of tips that ultimately led nowhere. Leaving investigators frustrated.
"It's very frustrating anytime you get a case like this because you know somebody out there knows something," said McGee.
Despite the fact it has been more than four years since Jane Doe's body was found in rural Fond du Lac County, Lieutenant McGee says they don't consider this a cold case and will continue to investigate every lead that comes in."
"It's an open and active case and it will remain that way,” said McGee. “As long as it takes.”
In 2009 sketches were released to help put a face to the missing woman, believed to be between 15-21 years old.
"We're confident of that, we're confident we know what she was wearing at the time, we know that somebody out there knows something," said McGee.
Investigators have also turned to posting her information on missing persons websites as well as the sheriff's department page. Her case has even been profiled on America's Most Wanted.
"We're hoping that with Christmas coming up somebody is going to have a crisis of confidence and come forward and tell us something," said McGee.
Waiting for the next lead, which could be the ultimate closure for Jane Doe and her family.
