UWO security plan similar to VA Tech

OSHKOSH - UW Oshkosh leaders say they have a plan in place, just incase a dangerous situation were to happen threatening the community's safety.

“Every crisis is different and has its own nuances, but much like Virginia Tech did today, there would be immediate communication with the campus community to let them know what we needed and police needed them to do to stay safe,” said Alex Hummel, a spokesperson for UW Oshkosh.

UWO officials say they made changes to the way they keep its campus safe after the 2007 deadly rampage at Virginia Tech.

“What you saw Virginia Tech do itself to improve security on campus, influenced a lot of other universities,” said Hummel.

Some of those influences include sign boards in all buildings, capable of relaying instant messages. Students can also sign up for text message alerts or download UW Oshkosh's mobile application.

“I think the system we have right now is multi-layered, but it's also inter-connected, which is the key that a lot of the messages will be repeated and echoed in different ways and channels,” said Hummel.

UW Oshkosh hasn't had to use its instant emergency alert system for a crime-related incident, but it has sent out messages in severe weather situations.

“You could have metal detectors at every door if you wanted, but realistically for what we have, it works great for our student body, both being convenient and safe,” said Tim Suess, the president of the Oshkosh Student Association.

Campus leaders say there is also a day of annual training. It includes collaboration with city and county emergency crews. The training events simulate situations similar to the ones that have taken place at Virginia Tech.

“We never know what incident could pop up, but we just need to be ready to respond,” said Hummel.
