Vice President Joe Biden stopping at UW-Oshkosh Friday

OSHKOSH - Vice President Joe Biden will be stopping at two colleges, including one in our area, during his visit to Wisconsin later this week.

Students lined up Tuesday for free tickets to see Vice President Joe Biden at UW-Oshkosh on Friday. College Democrat Daniel Dennis says this is a strategic stop for the campaign.

"Oshkosh specifically is a swing district in a swing state," said Dennis.

And with millions of students across the country, college stops are just another way for both parties to court potential voters.

"It's coming from all sides and students are at the center of it. So it's important for students to get involved," said Dennis.

While this is a visit from an important Democrat, College Republican chair Rocco Frievalt told FOX 11, students in his party are just as enthusiastic about this election.

"We do stuff from eight in the morning all the way til eleven at night, we're dropping off lit from door to door," said Frievalt.

A few classes will be moved for the vice president's visit Friday at Albee Hall, which is the same spot where the campus sets up polls on Election Day.

"One of our things that we'd like for our students to do is to make sure they're registered, that they get out to vote," said Petra Roter, UW-Oshkosh's vice chancellor of student affairs

FOX 11 did a Fact Check and found that about 2,700 UW-Oshkosh students voted in 2008, that's with about 3,000 living on campus.

Both Dennis and Frievalt told us students should be informed and do their civic duty.

"There's a lot at stake for students with this election, so I think the student vote is really important," said Dennis.

"I can't urge students more to get involved whether you're Republican, Democrat, Independent or you're not even sure," said Frievalt.

The Obama campaign says Biden will speak at Albee Hall on the UW-Oshkosh campus Friday morning.  Doors will open at 8:30, with the rally set to begin at about 10:45.

The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. One ticket will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets can be picked up beginning Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. at the following locations:

Obama for America - Oshkosh Office
480 N. Main Street
Oshkosh, WI 54901

Obama for America - Fond du Lac Office
21 N. Portland Street
Fond du Lac, WI 54935

Obama for America - Appleton Office
506 W. College Avenue
Appleton, WI 54911

The vice president is also making a stop at UW-Parkside in Kenosha.

Both President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney's campaigns see Wisconsin as one of nine states still in play ahead of the Nov. 6 election. Both sides have been hitting the state hard.

Obama appeared at a Madison rally earlier this month and Biden's visits on Friday mark the fifth time the vice president has stopped in Wisconsin this year. Romney's running mate, Paul Ryan, also has made a number of appearances in the state to campaign and spend time with his family in Janesville.
