GREEN BAY - Dreams of some day having international travel to and from Brown County's Austin Straubel Airport continue to be pursued.
Friday, airport officials and local lawmakers presented more than 1,300 letters of support for a full-service Federal Inspection Station.
It's also known as FIS.
With that, the airport could accommodate international flights.
The $7.5 million project was introduced in September.
Airport officials say they still need a commitment from U.S. customs to staff the facility.
"This community really wants an FIS and it makes sense to build it, staff it as an as needed basis, and then as the market grows, then they can adjust their staffing accordingly," said Tom Miller, Austin Straubel Airport director.
State and Brown County officials authorized spending $175,000 each to develop the inspection station.
The airport is hoping to get a federal grant to also pay for the project.
