GREEN BAY - Many businesses in our area are showing their appreciation this Veteran's Day weekend. And that means discounts and freebies at many retailers and restaurants.
Staff at The Bar on Holmgren Way say they're getting ready to entertain a group of VIPs on Sunday. But, it's not the usual crowd of Packers fans they're looking forward to welcome.
"All day tomorrow for Veteran's Day, we are going to give a free meal for every veteran that comes in with a military ID, up to a $10 value,” said owner Brett Mathews.
Besides local joints like The Bar, chain restaurants like Applebee's, Olive Garden, Texas Roadhouse and others are also offering discounts for service members.
Whether stopping by to get a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants offering a free meal, or perhaps picking up some things to do a bit of home improvement, businesses say giving a small discount is the least they can do for those who gave so much to our country.
"We kind of step out of our way and thank them for their service. We stop and shake their hand and tell them we really appreciate what they've done for us, allowing us to have the freedom we have,” said Mike Hesler, the manager at Home Depot on Green Bay’s west side.
Hesler says his store goes beyond a 10 percent off discount this weekend for veterans. It is displaying flags for each branch of the service along the main aisle.
“I wanted to fly them from Memorial Day straight through Veteran's Day,” he said.
While the retail price cuts are a perk, businesses and veterans say they hope others pay respect to veterans in non-commercial ways. The best tribute might just be remembering the true reason of why we have a day to celebrate those who served.
Restaurants offering discounts include Applebee’s, Chili’s, Denny’s, The Bar (all locations), Subway, Texas Roadhouse, T.G.I. Friday’s and Olive Garden. You’ll have to check with the individual restaurant to see when the promotion is valid.
Retailers offering discounts include Home Depot, Build-a-Bear Workshop, Lowe’s, and Old Navy.
All national parks, forests and monuments have free admission on Veterans Day, which is Sunday, November 11.
A valid military ID is required to receive most discounts. Check with individual businesses for more details.
