GREEN BAY - It took Packers fans about 15 minutes Friday morning to scoop up all thousand of the free tickets for Donald Driver’s retirement announcement.
The ceremony is Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Lambeau Field Atrium.
People starting lining up at Lambeau Field to receive the tickets at 10 p.m. Thursday night. Temperatures reached -4 overnight.
“He's the best receiver of all time and we've got to pay our devotion to him,” said Jeff Walker of Iron River, Michigan.
The Packers started handing out the free tickets to Driver's retirement ceremony at 9 a.m.
When the last ticket was claimed empty-handed fans started taking to the internet, hoping to pay someone who braved the cold wait.
“He's definitely my all-time favorite player, always has been, always probably will be,” said Sarah Woodruff of Madison, a Driver fan who couldn’t make it to Green Bay to wait for tickets.
Driver's retirement announcement next week is the same day as Woodruff’s birthday. She says she'll pay up to $500 to celebrate with number 80.
“Yes I know they got them for free, but they also sat out in the freezing cold for them and they are theirs now,” said Woodruff. “They can do what they want for them.”
Packers officials say they aren't doing any interviews about Driver's event until its held on Wednesday, but they did tell FOX 11 on the phone they never intended for the tickets to be resold. It also says on the tickets that they aren’t for resale.
FOX 11 found some sellers on Craigslist. One seller was looking for $100 a ticket.
Driver took to Twitter to voice his displeasure with tickets being sold. Driver wrote, “It's sad that someone would charge people to buy tickets to my event when I gave them the tickets for free. Please! Don't anyone buy them!”
Instead, Driver is hoping to see the fans who braved the cold next Wednesday when he officially announces his retirement.
