Cops, kids bond over holiday shopping

ASHWAUBENON - Those out doing a little Christmas shopping may have noticed a beefed up police presence at Brown County Shopko stores.

Officers from 11 different departments paired up with 160 children from needy homes for the 18th annual Shop with a Cop program.

"Shop with a Cop is an opportunity for kids to go out and shop for their families for this coming Christmas," said Ashwaubenon Public Safety Chief Eric Dunning.

The child comes with a wish list, while the cop keep track of the available cash.

But there is more than just holiday shopping taking place here. The officers and those shopping with the cops get something out of this you just can buy.

"I think many times kids look at police officers as maybe being strangers, here's a chance where we can bond together and get out in the community and help them do something for their family too," said Lt. Jody Crocker with Ashwaubenon Public Safety.

For Gianna Jicha of Green Bay this is her second year taking part in the program.

"I went to shop with a cop and I got presents for my family and me," said Jicha.

Shopko, other businesses, groups and individuals help to sponsor the shopping fun that includes breakfast and even wrapping the presents. It's promoted as a community event.

"Every year we've been able to increase the funding for each child because of the contributions from the community," said Dunning.

For many of those taking part this is the first year they've been able to buy gifts for their entire family. Officers say it's a great way to kick off the Christmas season.

And for the program that gives back to those in need, it shows those taking part the holidays aren't just about how much you get for Christmas, but more importantly the joy in giving what you can.

In addition to the shopping, each child participating received gifts of new hats, gloves and mittens.
