ASHWAUBENON - As if a regular Powerball jackpot isn't enough, rare gamblers and first timers were lining up in Ashwaubenon to try to win $550 million..
“Can't win if you don't buy 'em,” said Tricia Doney of Green Bay.
“I'm not a big gambler, in fact I'm a sore loser, so that's why I don't gamble, but this is fun,” said Jim Sievert of Green Bay.
On Wednesday evening, as of 5:30, the Kwik Trip on Lombardi Avenue had sold more than 27-hundred number combinations for the Powerball drawing.
“Everybody's talking about it and it's all over the news so why not buy them now,” said Doney. “Got as much chance as you or them.”
Since the Powerball started in 1992, there have been 15 Jackpot winners from Wisconsin. Since 2005, there have only been five. At least three of those came from Northeast Wisconsin.
In 2007, one hundred workers from Sargento Cheese in Plymouth won a $208 million pot. Later that year, Green Bay's Steve Peot won a more than $29 million jackpot. The last time it was won in Wisconsin was 2009, when Marinette's Doug Miron had the numbers for more than $31 million.
“You never know,” said Sievert. “It's one in 17.5 million or whatever it is. It's worth a chance.”
To be precise, that chance is one in more than 175 million.
