Danz gets moving with A.J. Hawk

School presented with $10,000 check

GREEN BAY - It was back to school Tuesday morning for one of the Packers' linebackers.

Former Ohio State University student A.J. Hawk visited Danz Elementary in Green Bay, and brought with him a check from the NFL for $10,000

The school is a Super School winner, part of the league's PLAY 60 initiative.

Hawk, on his day off from football practice, led the students in a workout.

It was a super check for a Super School.

A.J. Hawk made the presentation in front of 500 cheering students.

"We just couldn't believe it. We're so proud of the students and the school," said Gina Cornu, Danz Elementary principal.

Danz is one of 34 schools in the country to receive the award.

The school submitted three short essays detailing school spirit, the state of its physical education program, and ways to stay active.

"We have healthy snack, we actually have a salad bar, so we are really trying to showcase the PLAY 60 philosophy in our school," said Katie Mueller, Danz Elementary second grade teacher.

And on this day, students were put to the test.

There were obstacle courses, football relays, and even jumping rope, led by #50 himself.

"It's awesome to watch these kids, because they can do this all day, and they're not going to get tired," said A.J. Hawk, Packers linebacker.

Melvin Soto got to play a little catch with Hawk.

"It was awesome, because it's really fun. I just love football," said Melvin Soto, Danz Elementary fifth grade student.

Students used a little originality with their take on the players’ touchdown celebrations.

"I'm a big fan of the Raji dance, myself," said Adam Hansen, Danz Elementary physical education teacher.

So when can we expect the A.J. Hawk dance?

"I never really felt real natural doing anything, so I never came up with anything not yet, at least. But who knows, we'll see," said Hawk.

The school will use the $10,000 to upgrade its gymnasium equipment.

"Our number one goal is to put up a traverse rock climbing wall. That's going to take a big chunk of it. But it will be awesome for the students to have that opportunity to use something like that," said Hansen.

Until then, students will continue their super school routine.

Danz Elementary can win even more money.

Each super school is eligible for another $10,000 NFL's "Keep Gym in School" program.
