Kwanzaa celebration held in Green Bay

Celebrates traditional values

GREEN BAY - In Green Bay, a Kwanzaa celebration took place Saturday at the KI Convention Center.

Guests enjoyed dance performances, a candle-lighting ceremony and lunch. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority was featured at the event.

Kwanzaa is an African-American celebration of traditional values such as family and community. Local students say it’s important to celebrate cultural differences.

"Communication comes from understanding,” said University of Wisconsin-Green Bay freshman Javaris Brauford. “Sometimes we can't understand each other because we don't speak the same language - and that's not literally, that's culturally. So, for us to understand different customs and traditions such as Kwanzaa, it's helpful."

UW-Green Bay, St. Norbert College and Northeast Wisconsin Technical College sponsored the event.
