Has recent rain been enough for yards?

ALLOUEZ - Jill Deprey admits her Allouez backyard is her haven and is in constant need of water.

“The last couple of days waking up to hearing the rain has just been wonderful, just to know I don't have to spend another hour watering my flowers,” said Deprey.

“It's been amazing, it's been a blessing,” said Mark Konlock, the horticulture director at the Green Bay Botanical Gardens.

Konlock says the recent rain will help wake up area lawns.

“In the next week or so, if it continues to rain, lawns should come out of dormancy is my guess,” said Konlock.

Konlock doesn't advise fertilizing lawns just because it has rained recently, unless you are anxious to get the lawnmower back out.

“Usually average lawns that aren't maintained with water and irrigation don't need a lot of fertilizers,” said Konlock. “Typically you only need one application in either early spring or even toward the fall.”

Konlock says to stay green and keep growing, a lawn needs about an inch of water per week. He says the same goes for plants and flowers.

“It helps if it is a little bit spread out, so an inch one time a week would be sufficient,” said Konlock.

As for Deprey, she says the rain will save her money and best of all, time, so she can spend more time enjoying her yard.

“It’s my outlet,” said Deprey.
