GREEN BAY - Green Bay police are investigating an early morning shooting that left one man dead on the city's west side Sunday.
Police officials confirm shortly before 1 a.m., officers shot and killed an armed 35-year-old Green Bay man. The shooting took place outside Packer Stadium Lounge in the 1300 block of South Broadway Avenue.
Authorities say a Green Bay man fired a semi-automatic pistol outside the bar. Police say when officers arrived they ordered the man to drop the gun. Authorities say instead he pointed it at the officers, who then shot the suspect.
The 35-year-old man later died at the hospital.
"We heard a shot, and then we heard what we think was four more," said witness Dawn Weier.
Weier arrived at the bar shortly before the shooting. She was with her sister and their parents. They estimate about 25 people were in the bar at the time.
"They kept saying, there's a gun, there's a gun, call the cops and people were running in and out, and we were trying to keep the doors locked," Weier said. "I was crying, my mom was crying. You don't know what's going to happen, you don't know if it's going to come in the bar or if he's going to shoot through the window, so everyone was just kind of scared. People were hiding, and it was very, very nerve wracking."
Weier says the bar was pretty much on lockdown until about 2:30 a.m..
Witnesses believe the shooting may have been triggered by a confrontation they witnessed earlier inside the bar.
"I heard this guy and girl bickering, this other guy got in and then the other guy put on his hat and walked out the door and shortly after, the disc jockey's husband said there's a guy outside with a gun," explained witness Julie Winnen.
Police declined to release details about their investigation or release the gunman's name.
"We all feel terrible about it. None of the girls (bartenders) knew him," said bar owner Danny Shandor. "We just don't have any idea who he was, where he lived. We feel bad for him and his family, but we don't know what the circumstances are."
Shandor said he was notified about the incident shortly after it happened. He's owned the business for 27 years and said he is shocked.
"It's all virgin territory for us, we don't know, we still don't know how to respond," Shandor said. "All our neighbors over there, we all take care of our businesses, we're very family-oriented, all of us, and this is just something that doesn't happen."
The police investigation is ongoing, with the focus trying to determine why the gunman refused to follow police orders.
We expect to learn more details about the shooting and the investigation at a news conference set for 10 a.m. Monday.
