Police still looking for info, suspects in string of burglaries

GREEN BAY - New details are emerging in what police are calling one of the largest burglary sprees they've seen in Green Bay.

It appears the thieves are breaking into cars and garages looking for cash and credit cards.

Police say this past week multiple break-ins happened on the Northeast side in the area of Nautical Avenue, Sussex Road, Edinburgh Road, Wiggins Way and Peterson Road.

Police say they still don't know who broke into a yet-to-be determined number of cars and garages in the Red Smith neighborhood Friday night into Saturday morning.

"They usually have several but this one in this particular instance seemed like an awful lot,” said Lt. Mark Hellmann, saying the number of places hit seemed particularly high.

But, Hellmann says investigators are beginning to understand the thieves' methods.

“If the car was open they were utilizing that. But other than that, they were breaking in,” said Hellmann.

Police say it's important to take out your valuables from your car, because these thieves are targeting credit and debit cards.

"Anything for electronic transactions. Get to ATMs, get to businesses open all night, and use them before the victim knows they're gone and can stop them or cancel the card. In this case, they did have cards utilized from Green Bay all the way down to Milwaukee,” said Hellmann.

FOX 11 spoke with some neighbors out in their yards Sunday morning. They didn't want to go on camera, but say their neighborhood is very safe.

Police say they think not all the break-ins have been reported.

"Everybody that was victimized that night, give us a call, so we can put together that pattern of operation and put together a whole story instead of a partial one,” said Hellmann.

Police say they hope that story will end with the arrest of the currently unknown suspects.
