GREEN BAY - It appears the city of Green Bay is working toward a settlement with the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay over capacity at the St. John the Evangelist homeless shelter.
Last month, the city cited the shelter for allegedly violating its conditional use permit of 64 residents. Officials from the shelter and diocese have said they would not turn anyone away due to the limit. The shelter could be fined $500 plus court costs for each violation of the permit.
The shelter pleaded not guilty earlier this month.
On Tuesday, assistant city attorney Jim Mueller told FOX 11 a pre-trial conference scheduled for next Tuesday has been taken off the municipal court calendar. Mueller says the city and diocese have entered into private settlement negotiations. A new court date would only be set if the judge finds it necessary.
