ASHWAUBENON - Suicide is an unfortunate reality in our community, but it's also something that is preventable.
Here at FOX 11, we're working with the Brown County Suicide Task Force learn about the problem and better understand how to help.
We also want to provide this information to the public in a professional and ethical manner.
Friday, employees had a chance to listen to a seminar on preventing suicide, and talk about the warning signs.
Experts say there are things that we can do to help those who may be considering killing themselves.
"I think what we've learned today is that it's important to confront somebody, go up to somebody and talk to somebody, listen to people. And try to really be a little bit more sensitive to where people are at emotionally,” said WLUK general manager Jay Zollar.
"Not everything jumps right out there at you. So again, we say open your eyes, listen. If there's something that you perceive is a problem, something going on, you can make a difference simply by talking,” said Al Klimek, Brown County medical examiner.
"Smile at a stranger, I think it's just being kind to one another. But being aware that there are signs to so many different things, and just being knowledgeable of that, they'll keep their eyes open to their loved ones and friends and their colleagues,” said Peggy Corsi, brother committed suicide.
Experts say asking how someone is doing is a simple way to offer them hope. If you think someone is in danger, call 911.
